A couple of days ago, I sat with a really good friend of mine at dinner and we had a startlingly honest conversation. [Don't you feel like all of the best conversations happen over dinner?] We sat across from each other and talked about big, big, big things. Finally, she put down her fork and looked at me and said, "It just makes me feel so inadequate." I don't know how many times that word has come out of my mouth in the last four months, but it's probably in the hundreds.
It's such an ugly thing, you know? To not feel like you're good enough - whether it's smart enough, pretty enough, funny enough, or just enough for your significant other. I've decided that it boils down to only one thing. And the one thing is the exact same thing for every single person.
People need to feel like they matter. They need someone that is on their team every single day, no matter what. They need someone to look at them at the end of the day and say, "Hey. I saw you today. What you did today? It mattered. YOU matter." People need a witness to their lives - someone that says at the end of the day that you lived.
Do you know what I've found?
I've found that it's hard.
"People are broken," this same friend said to me. "Everyone is broken."
And damn if that's not true.
The trouble is that we often can't see past our own hurts and broken in order to validate and encourage and give to the people around us.
So are you listening hard?
I'm about to tell you something huge.
I see you every day. And you matter.
Even if you just walked the dog and that was the only thing you accomplished the whole entire day.
Even if you feel like you'll never catch a break.
Even if you have a whole team of heart warriors around you telling you every day that you're loved.
It doesn't matter.
I still see you. And you still matter.
So that inadequacy that you feel creeping up through your toes and right into your heart? Go ahead and shut it down.
Because you're good enough, darling.
