Finally, after I whined and whined about my day, my socks, my dinner, him not answering, and probably even HIS socks, he just said straight out, "Tell me what you need from me." His frustration with me was palpable.
First? I was taken aback. He disarms me completely on the reg (and usually with his honest questions), but I eventually got my bearings.
And I thought ... because THAT question demands an answer.
What do I need?
What do I need?
On that particular night, what I wanted was so simple ... but I've thought about his question so much since then. How many times does your significant other, or your boss, or your best friend just look at you and whisper the question: What do you need from me?
Most of the time, what we're desperate for is easily obtainable. And you know what it is?
- You're doing a good job.
- I really like ...
- I'm proud of you.
- You're beautiful. [So easy. Show me a girl that doesn't wanna hear it and I'll call her a liar.]
You know, one of my favorite friends often is telling people, "See a need, fill a need." It's been a refrain in my head for months now. It's so much like the question: What do you need?
Why do we not ask that more often?
How can I help you?
What would make this better?
What can I do for you today?
So I guess what I'm really trying to remind you of is that everyone needs something. We're all out here walking around this big ol' place by ourselves, and sometimes - we just need someone to hold our hands. So maybe add that to your resolutions list? And on the list, make sure it's above "gym time", because we all know how long that'll last.
See a need, fill a need -- that one should last all year.
